I am always inspired by delightful old cottages and their beautiful gardens as they make wonderful subjects to paint when the light is right. The day was partly overcast and the scene was bathed in a harmonious warm afternoon light. My approach was to under-paint in a bright pink in an attempt to warm, harmonize and counteract the many greens. The interplay between soft and hard edges is intended to direct attention towards areas of interest.
I have painted this old house before but these subjects always appear different due to their ever-growing gardens, changing seasons and time of day. Perhaps I will paint this old cottage again in the future but of course, one can only hope that this enchanting old cottage will still be here to be painted again another day.
